Science badger experiments in the lab, using Chat GPT to understand LinkedIn analytics

Ever feel like LinkedIn is a bit of a blur? Posts come and go, you’re not quite sure who’s paying attention, and you’re left wondering if any of it is actually working.

Over the past few months, I’ve been experimenting with ChatGPT to see how it might be useful for people like you who want to make sense of what’s already happened through their LinkedIn analytics. Not for predictions or gimmicks, but a clearer way to surface the patterns hidden in your own data.

That’s where The Sett B2B Social Insights Analyst GPT comes in. Upload your LinkedIn data export (the ZIP file LinkedIn sends you), and suddenly the fog clears.

Here’s what you’ll see:

🦡 How your network has grown over time (the peaks, the troughs, and the plateaus).

🦡 Your “regulars” — the people who keep cropping up in your comments and mentions (when that data is in your export, of course).

🦡 Who’s become a LinkedIn spectre - connections who were previously active but have since drifted away.

🦡 Which of your posts actually hit the mark (as opposed to the ones you thought would).

Quick reality check

The insights you can get are limited to the data LinkedIn actually gives you in your data export (see below for how to grab yours), so that means:

🦡 You'll see comments and mentions clearly

🦡 Sometimes you'll get reaction counts, but not always who gave them

🦡 You won't see the impact of impressions, private messages, or every single like

So, when it says some has 'no engagement' with you, it really means 'no visible engagement in the export'. It's not perfect, but it's certainly eaiser than sifting through it manually. You can also ask it to create graphs for more visual insights, if it responds with a table, or a .csv file.

How much is it?

Nada. Zip. Zilch. This is an experiment for me, and not a formal product offering. However, if you find it useful and you'd like to show your support, here are a few things you can do:

  1. Share this blog post across your own social channels, or directly in your emails with people who might want to have a play with it too

  2. Give me a shout if you need some paid support with your personal, professional efforts on LinkedIn (I'm quite good at that)

  3. Without wishing to cross the streams too much, you can make a contribution to support my men's mental health project, GoodEnoughChats. All the money that goes into this Buy Me A Coffee account is used to help me invest more time and resources in growing the mission.

How to get your LinkedIn analytics in a data export

LinkedIn doesn’t make this easy to find, so here’s the shortcut:

1. Got to this part of LinkedIn in your settings

👉 (log in first if you’re not already).

2. Choose the full download

👉 Select “Download larger data archive” — this is the one with connections, interactions, and messages.

3. Wait for the email

👉 Depending on how long you’ve been knocking about on LinkedIn, it can take minutes or a day.

4. Download the ZIP

👉 Inside are spreadsheets (CSV files) with everything LinkedIn will let you have.

👉 This is when the GPT builds your dashboard and turns those spreadsheets into something you can actually use.

⚠️ Worth knowing:

• If you come back to this GPT later, you’ll need to re-upload your ZIP so the dashboard can be rebuilt in the chat for your latest session

What to ask once you’re in

🦡 “Who are my top 50 engagers in the last year?”

🦡 “Which connections have gone quiet recently?”

🦡 “Show me my first 10 LinkedIn connections.”

🦡 “What were my most engaging posts last quarter?”

🦡 “Month by month, how many comments vs reactions did I get this year?”

Try it out with whatever questions you want to ask and see what you can learn.

Bottom line

This isn’t about chasing vanity metrics or “growth hacks”. It’s simply a way of looking back at what your LinkedIn activity has actually done for you.

✅ Request your export.

✅ Upload the file.

✅ Explore your dashboard.
